Orlando Stakes Its Claim as
America's Top Golf Destination By Mike Jamison
ORLANDO, FL - GolfOrlando enters its third year with two major goals in mind. 1) Bolster its effort to promote Orlando Florida as a premier golf destination. 2) Do that while balancing atop the ever-shifting wave of technology.
So far, so good.
The new co-op marketing group, consisting of 28 of Central Florida's best golf courses, begins its third season with a solid budget, a new web site and outstanding exposure on the internet. The ultimate goal is to make it very easy for the golfer to book his or her vacation to Orlando.
Once on the site, visitors can customize their vacation, choosing from dozens of packages that vary in length of stay, cost, courses, accommodations and location. The entire vacation can be planned and booked online.
"Our goal in GolfOrlando is to communicate to golfers around the world that Orlando is THE place to go for the most complete golf getaway," said GolfOrlando president Bruce Gerlander, general manager at Orange County National. "Orlando has so much to offer travelers - 365 days of value - and we want to let golfers know about the attractive and challenging courses they can play in our town."
Most of the industry's leading golf course architects have left their signature in the Orlando area - Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Rees Jones, Greg Norman, Ron Garl, Arthur Hills and Robert Trent Jones to name a few. All of the professional tours have conducted events in Orlando, and several mini tours play regularly in the area. And more professional golfers have put down roots in Orlando than in any other city in the country.
"We have all the ingredients necessary to be a great golf destination," said Tony Johnson, secretary/treasurer of GolfOrlando and general manager at Timacuan Golf and Country Club. "In fact, with all of the other entertainment here, Orlando has more to offer than any other golf destination."
"The Orlando landscape is covered with tremendous golf courses," said Kenny Winn, general manager at Falcon's Fire Golf Club and vice president of GolfOrlando. "During the first three months of the year our courses attract our fair share of players from the north and Midwest.
"In the past when you pick up golf magazines, you don't usually see Orlando mentioned as a golf destination like some other regions. GolfOrlando is changing that. This is a great place to play golf 12 months out of the year, and we have to do a better job in getting that message to the golfers. That is the mission of GolfOrlando."
