Course and Slope Rating Significantly Increase at Mystic Dunes Golf Club By Mike Jamison
CELEBRATION, FL -- The word is out about the unique experience a golfer can have at Mystic Dunes Golf Club in the Orlando area, and a revised rating by the USGA does nothing to dispute that. During recent certification, the USGA increased the course and slope ratings for the six-year-old golf course.
With large, sloping greens reminiscent of Augusta National and meticulous course conditioning, golfers can count on a superior golf experience year-round. Rick Smith, Head Golf Professional at Mystic Dunes, is not surprised with the increase in ratings.
"Since opening a few years ago, our landscape has had a chance to mature, offering golfers a truly unique experience on one of the area's most beautiful courses," said Smith. "Recent enhancements to the course include the restructuring of bunkers and subtle changes in the areas surrounding the greens."
From the back tees, the men’s course rating, a number used to measure the average score by a scratch golfer on the course is now 75, up from 74.3. The slope rating has increased from 137 to 145.
"We are pleased with the growth and maturity of the course since our first rating," acknowledged Melissa Suttles, General Manager at Mystic Dunes Golf Club. "Although the slope rating did increase, the course is still a fair, yet challenging test for every player."
According to Ken Hagamann, Director of Course Rating at the Florida State Golf Association, "the USGA process is to rate new courses three or four times in the first 10 years." Since the ratings are based on several factors, Hagamann is unable to give specifics on why the ratings went up. However, he said "changes in the USGA rating manual may have also played a part in the increase."
Mystic Dunes Golf Club, a high-end daily fee course, is open to the public and is located at the Wyndham Palms Resort and C.C. in Orlando, Fla. Designed by Champions Tour player and NBC Golf Analyst Gary Koch, this premier Central Florida course is a par-71, 7,102-yard golfer’s dream. The course is listed by Golf Digest's "Best Places To Play" as a four-star facility, and is ranked #2 among "Orlando's Top 5 Golf Courses" by TravelGolf.com. Mystic Dunes also was a host site of the 2005 Buick Scramble National Championship.
