ARNOLD PALMER'S BAY HILL CLUB & LODGE (Orlando) |
Resort Stay & Play |
|
Truly one of the most recognizable courses in America, Bay Hill is known as Arnold Palmer's winter home course. The original design, by Dick Wilson, dates back to 1961. However, it seems like they are always tinkering with the layout, making it better and tougher for today's pros. The course is most famous for its final three holes, but the other 15 are just as impressive. It's one of those layouts that can just jump up and grab you at anytime. Number six, for example, probably sees more X's than pars. It's a massive par five, that hooks around a beautiful lake. A stay at Bay Hill is golf at its best! Who knows, you may even see Mr. Palmer on the course, the practice tee, or in the clubhouse. |

BRIDGEWATER, THE GOLF CLUB AT (Lakeland) |
Surcharge From -($7.00) |
|
Ranked #18 by Golfweek's Best Courses To Play in Florida 2008, this exciting links-style course called for all of architect Steve Smyers' years of skill and ability in course design. The goal: to build a challenging test of golf, a pleasurable experience for all skill levels, a stern challenge for long hitters. As a reclaimed phosphate mine with stands of native oaks, the original terrain was flat. The topography now features undulating fairways (six connected by winding bridges) and multi-tiered tees and greens, many surrounded by well- placed bunkers. The flow of the land around the greens was carried onto the putting surfaces, resulting in slopes, ridges, and numerous potential hole locations. BridgeWater requires 'strategy' to play skillfully and rewards classic shotmaking with an extra risk/reward approach. In Lakeland, just off I-4 between Kissimmee and Tampa. |

This world-class 36-hole facility, designed by Greg Norman, opened in the fall of 2000. Although Norman designed it as an "Australian links," the International was also clearly influenced by his British Open success and features a wild, windswept appearance. The fairways are peppered with devilish pot bunkers, making it a tough challenge to safely reach small, slick greens. At a stretch of over 7,300 yards, it has one of the highest course ratings in the state ~ truly unique, challenging, and memorable. Greg Norman has designed the National as a classic American-style layout that rolls gently through 200 acres of southern woodlands and wetlands. The layout's key trait is diversity with wall-to-wall fairway bunkers running up along holes 12 through 16, three double doglegs, a massive double-green shared by the fourth and 16th holes, and a sunken fairway on the seventh. Impeccably maintained, the National boasts a pristine, natural golf experience without bordering homes or developments. DEBARY GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB (Debary) Rating based on (57) customer reviews
|
Surcharge From $0.00 |
|
Located on Orlando's north side in DeBary, this challenging course was designed by the golf design team of Clifton, Ezell and Clifton and is part of a vibrant semi-private country club community. Most holes are set away from the community by a buffer zone of dense woods and vegetation. The setting is more reminiscent of the Carolinas than Central Florida and The National Audubon Society has certified the course as an official bird sanctuary habitat. Most interesting for this part of Florida is the fact that the layout features just one water hazard, which borders both the 9th and 18th greens; these finishing holes join together and create a beautiful backdrop for their spacious clubhouse. With great course conditions, undulating fairways, and greens that always roll true and fast, it's no wonder Debary is consistently chosen as a US Open Qualifying site. Deer Island Club is the centerpiece of a remote 400-acre island that separates beautiful Lake Dora and Lake Beauclaire. The shoreline is rimmed with ancient oaks, pines, palms and cypress trees, along with panoramic views of quaint Mt. Dora in the background. Most likely you'll even catch a glimpse of lounging native alligators along the lake banks. Although water borders all 18 holes, the course is eminently fair and will not penalize a good shot. Architect Joe Lee called Deer Island the "most unique course I've ever designed." An excellent value, this course is well worth the drive to Mt. Dora, 40 minutes northwest of Orlando. Built in 1926, Mission Inn's El Campeon, "The Champion," is one of the south's oldest and most historical, prestigious golf courses. Rolling fairways (some dramatic), undulating greens and well-placed berms, bunkers and sandy waste areas, as well as water on 11 holes, all only begin to characterize the aura of El Campeon. Just rated 4 stars by Golf Digest's "Best Places To Play, 2008/2009." You can't miss the Spanish-style resort inn/ hotel in the background. Just rated 4 stars by Golf Digest's "Best Places To Play, 2008/2009" and nominated as Golf Digest's 1992 "Best New Resort Course," Las Colinas offers quite a different challenge from El Campeon. Its wide open fairways and gently rolling hills create an inland links design that contrasts and at the same time, compliments its older sister course. Greens are large and undulating, while the course's classic old architecture style demands proper shot placement. Water can be found on 14 holes and again, large berms are found to framework numerous fairways. Mystic Dunes was designed by PGA Tour Professional and NBC golf analyst Gary Koch, opened in Fall 2001. As a par 71, 7012-yard course, Mystic Dunes' layout is truly unique to Orlando. The "low-country" front nine weaves its way through majestic oaks and pine trees, similar to those courses in the Carolinas, meandering through marsh and wetlands. ORLANDO EliteResort Stay & Play |
|
Arnold Palmer's 6916-yard Legacy course at Reunion Resort is routed over surprisingly hilly "roller coaster-like" terrain. The natural flow of the land provides dramatic elevation changes and creates a number of "risk/reward" shots for the gutsy player. Much like Mr. Palmer himself, you can "go for broke" on numerous occasions. In particular, the 349-yard, par-four 13th is vintage Palmer. It just begs for a heroic tee shot and - if pulled off -- a legitimate chance for eagle or birdie. Honors & Accolades#12 on GolfWeek's list of Florida Public Access Courses

Says Watson; "Golf attracts more players than any other outdoor sport. No doubt there are almost as many reasons for this as there are players, but one reason is certainly shared by all. It's the simple pleasure of being on a beautiful course." While The Independence is certainly beautiful, it's equally challenging. Rated by Golf Digest as the Best New Course in 1994 and one of the Top 50 Courses in Florida by The Florida Golfer in 1999, this Ted McAnlis layout is a truly diverse test of golf. Shot positioning is crucial as water and/or wetlands can be found on 16 holes; however, the fairways had been widened in 2004 to create more fair and forgiving landing areas. The front nine is not encumbered by homes, but water features do abound. The back nine plays through a more residential area, offering more generous fairways. With water on eight holes and free-forming collars around the greens, there's a definite emphasis on the short game. After all, golf's most famous adage is "drive for show and putt for dough." ZELLWOOD STATION GOLF CLUB (Zellwood) |
Surcharge From -($9.00) |
Although it doesn't always get the recognition it deserves with all the new courses in town, Zellwood remains a popular track on the north side of Orlando in Apopka. Great prices, good course conditions and consistently excellent greens make this a fun (yet surprisingly challenging) layout. Located about 35-40 minutes north of Orlando and not far from hotels in the Altamonte Springs area, just west on Hwy. 441. 4 brand new holes (#2-5) will not open for play until the beginning of spring/ summer 2010 - very exciting and quite an addition; will bring an entirely new feel to the Front Nine!
